Why Great

British Romance?

Because places like

these deserve their own

love stories.

Great British Romance deserves its own place on the bookshelf.

I've always been fascinated by romance novels. Not just because I love reading them (although, I really do), but because I became obsessed with one question:

Why do some love stories stay with us long after we close the book?

You know the ones I mean. The ones where the characters feel like real people. The ones that have fictional towns you secretly search online for, to see if they actually exist so you can visit or move there. The relationships that have you saying just one more chapter hours after bedtime, even though you absolutely know it will not be just one more chapter.

For years, I wanted to understand what made those stories different. Why some books completely pulled me in, while others, even with a trope I usually loved, just didn't have the same magic. So I stopped simply reading romance novels. I started studying them.

Obviously, spending hours reading romance novels in the name of research was a terrible hardship. But somehow, I managed.

And after all that reading, studying (and yes, occasionally crying over fictional people) I discovered something important...

Unforgettable romances aren't built from tropes alone.

Now, before you come after me, hear me out.

I love a good trope, I really do, to the point I don't think I could pick a favourite. It would be a struggle to choose three, but if I had to I would say second chance, grumpy sunshine, and enemies to lovers. See? Definitely not anti-trope.

I know there is a reason we all come back to these stories again and again.

But a trope is only the beginning. The trope is not the reason we stay up way beyond bedtime. The story needs more than that.

I have found the strongest romances are created when three things work together.

The Who

The characters at the heart of the story.Their fears. Their dreams. Their wounds. The relationship that changes everything.

The Where

The world around them. The village. The workplace. The family. The community. The place that shapes who they are and how they fall in love. Because in Great British Romance, setting is never just somewhere pretty in the background. It matters.

The How

The relationship journey. The moments that build trust, tension, longing, connection and eventually make us believe these two people belong together.

This is the heart of the Skrinkle Lane Method, and it's how I help writers build romances readers remember.

Why trust me with your story?

I'm Val.

Trained in literature.

Qualified in developmental editing.

And completely obsessed with romance.

I have a BA (Hons) in English Literature and Creative Writing, professional fiction editing training through Liminal Pages, and I spend a slightly ridiculous amount of time thinking about why fictional people should or should not end up together.

Skrinkle Lane brings those things together:

A love of romance.

A study of story.

A belief that Great British Romance deserves to be understood, celebrated and created.

So whether you're looking for your next favourite book, trying to understand why the romances you love work, or writing one of your own...welcome home.
